Top 5 Mushroom Knives

While not necessary to start mushroom hunting, if you plan on picking mushrooms, a good mushroom knife can be a great tool to ensure you make a clean cut when harvesting mushrooms and not damage the mycelium beneath the surface. There are a wide variety of different knifes and styles out there, but the best one will really depend on your personal preferences. Here are the top 5 we have found, including some knifes recommended to us by fellow mushroom hunters.

As always, if you feel there was a great mushroom knife we missed, feel free to e-mail it to us at MushroomBlog.com@gmail.com

1. Opinel No.8 Mushroom Folding Knife

Its probably no surprise that Opinel took the #1 spot, the No.08 Mushroom knife is heralded by many mushroom foragers as THE mushroom knife to have! It features a curved blade to help cut delicate mushrooms, and a boars hair brush on the end to help wipe away any dust or debris. The Opinel company has made knives since 1890 from its headquarters in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, Savoie, France.

My brother has had this knife for a few years now and it has served us well, still as sharp as the day we got it!

2. Sagaform Forest Mushroom/Truffle Knife with Canvas Case

This was my number 2 choice behind the Opinel and a great option for newbies and seasoned mushroom hunters alike. The biggest feature this knife has over the Opinel is that it has small measurment markers on it to help identify mushrooms. You will see many knifes very similar to this on sites like Amazon, but at the time of this writing, this one has the best reviews.

3. Classic Outdoors Folding Lock Mushroom Knife

Personally I think this mushroom knife looks the coolest out of all of the knifes on this list. I love the color of the stained wood handle and the fact that it has a locking blade makes it much safer to use. The boars hair brush also offers a more gentle bristle to brush off dirt than a plastic brush would, making it ideal for mushroom hunting.

4. Higo no Kami 10 Pocket Knife

Now this isn't a mushroom knife per se, but I still think it is a really cool option for mushroom hunters. The Higo no Kami Pocket Knife is a type of folding pocket knife originating in Miki, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan in 1896. The knife first appeared as a result of smiths struggling with the lowering demand for swords with the decline of the samurai under the reforms made by Emperor Meiji in the late 19th century.

So basically you'll be mushroom hunting with a mini Katana! :)

But seriously, the biggest advantage of this knife is how compact it is. Bigger knifes don't fit in all pockets and can be annoying to carry around. If size is the most important factor for you, the Higo no Kami would be a great choice.

5. Whetstone Cutlery Bill Blade Stainless Steel Folding Knife

With a steel blade and aluminum handle, this knife is the most modern looking knife on the list while offering a good value for the money. This knife features a locking mechanism, a belt clip for convenience and a serrated portion of the blade. While serration isn't necessary for mushrooms, it can be helpful for other uses while you're outdoors.
